The power of connection!

A world of separation

Conflicts and differences of opinion

As conflicts and differences of opinion arise from all sides, intensifying an already strong sense of division, we often forget that we are, above all, social beings—beings who belong to a community.

Individualism

Today’s society seems to value—and I would even go so far as to say encourage—individualism, sometimes at the expense of teamwork and community support. We learn to push our personal limits, to climb the ladder based on our performance and sometimes even our appearance (a person who exudes more self-confidence will potentially have more opportunities for advancement than someone who exudes less—which may seem logical). We learn to want to do better than our neighbor… or than the competition.

Its harmful effects

All of this has a visible impact on our way of life. For example:

  • While our ancestors lived in clans or tribes, most of us today live only with our immediate family.

  • Both parents in a household often have their own careers, each with its own demands and pressures.

  • We are more mobile (both geographically and professionally), which makes us less likely to put down roots somewhere.

  • Although we are more electronically connected than ever, we are also more socially isolated than ever.

  • Caught up in our daily routines, the quality and quantity of our social relationships often decline or are pushed to the background.

See the other side: a world of connection with others!

Connection and personal development

As we follow these societal trends, we overlook one essential point: we thrive when we are immersed in feelings of belonging and connection with others, and we suffer when we isolate ourselves and feel lonely.

Isolation and its harmful effects

Isolation is often associated with:

  • An increase in stress and anxiety

  • An increase in blood pressure

  • An increase in inflammation

  • An increased risk of illness and death

The benefits of a social network

Conversely, a person who is well-supported and has a strong social network generally experiences:

  • An increase in life expectancy

  • Improved functioning of the cardiovascular, endocrine and immune systems

  • Better Mental Health

  • Greater resilience in the face of stress

Connection and oxytocin

Oxytocin—which is released during our social interactions—promotes calm and trust, while increasing our desire to connect with others.

In conclusion

Let's rediscover the joy of spending time with our loved ones… or even with new people! Connecting with others is so important for our overall well-being!
