Recognizing the humanity in all of us!

The interconnection between our perceptions and our judgment

Although I've been less active on social media these past few weeks, I've been very attentive to the people around me... and often surprised by how quickly we jump to conclusions (myself included).

What shapes our perceptions?

Often, our perceptions color our judgment and influence how we act toward a person or a situation, without taking the time to validate those perceptions.

For example:

  • We might feel that some colleagues are working less than others, or are less efficient… but do we actually take the time to ask what they're working on?

  • Maybe they’re handling files we don't know about…

  • Maybe they work from home later in the evening to make up for leaving early or arriving late that day…

  • Maybe we didn't clearly explain what we expected from them…

  • Maybe they don’t feel comfortable asking us questions because of how we react when they do…

The importance of validating our perceptions

Sometimes, simply taking the time to call or go directly to the person involved and talk with them can offer a completely different perspective on the situation!

We are all human

A picture is worth a thousand words

With that in mind, I want to share a short video that still moves me deeply today and opened my eyes to something essential: we are all human.

This is not about excusing certain behaviors (which can be hurtful or inappropriate). But we can try to be more attentive to the reality others are living.

After all, we are all human. We all need love, compassion and respect. Some received more of it growing up, others less, and that has undeniably shaped how we act and react today.

Moment for reflection

And you, how do you feel when watching this video? What do you take away from it?

What could you change today in your interactions with others?

My curiosity to communicate and connect with people - to better understand their reality and their perception of things - allows me today to be more open and less judgmental.

Taking the time to listen to others

I'm convinced that everything can be said, but there is a way to say things, a way that depends on each person and each situation.

By taking the time to listen to others, we can engage in a real, meaningful conversations!

After all, we are all doing our best, based on the knowledge we have in the moment! So why not expand that knowledge, so we can do even better than yesterday?
