Recognizing our humanity of us all!
The interrelation of our perceptions and judgment
While I've been less active on social media in recent weeks, I've been no less attentive to the people around me... and often surprised at how quickly we can jump to conclusions (and I include myself in that).
What are our perceptions based on?
Often, our perceptions color our judgment and actions toward a person or situation, without our taking the time to validate those perceptions.
For example:
We may have the impression that a colleague is working less than the others, or is under-performing, but do we take the trouble to ask them what they're working on?
Perhaps he/she is working on files we don't know about?
Perhaps he/she works from home later in the evening to compensate for his/her earlier departure or later arrival that day?
Perhaps we didn't explain properly what we expected of him/her?
Perhaps he/she feels uncomfortable asking us questions because of our reactions when he/she does so?
The importance of validating our perceptions
In short, sometimes taking the time to call or go directly to the person concerned and talk to them can give us a whole new perspective on the situation!
We are all human
A picture is worth a thousand words
With this in mind, I'd like to share with you a short video that, to this day, touches me deeply and opened my eyes to the fact that... we're all human.
Far from wanting to excuse certain behaviors (which may be hurtful and/or inappropriate) of the people around us, we can nevertheless try to be more attuned to their reality.
After all, we're all human, we all need love, compassion and respect. Some of us will have had more than others growing up, some less, and this has had a definite impact on the way we are and act today.
Moment of reflection
How does this video make you feel? What do you take away from it?
What could you change today in your interactions with others?
My curiosity to communicate and exchange with others, in order to better understand their reality and their perception of things, allows me today to be more open rather than judgmental.
Taking the time to listen to others
I'm convinced that anything can be said, but that there's a way of saying things, a way that's specific to each person and each situation!
By taking the time to listen to others, we can engage in a real conversation with them!
After all, we're all doing the best we can, to the best of our knowledge at the time! So why not expand our current knowledge to do even better than yesterday?
