Art and Our Health…Is There a Connection?

Present…even away from social media!

Although I've been less active on social media over the past month, I've been very present in person — supporting people around me through various moments of awareness, some easier than others, but each just as important.

The Art of Group Coaching!

Yesterday was one of those powerful moments where I witnessed the power of a group coaching session!

From a personal insight…

After a personal realization about the breadth and meaning of art for each of us — sparked during a conversation about activity ideas with colleagues — I had the chance to lead a group coaching session on the topic yesterday.

…to a collective awakening!

Although the topic initially surprised the participants, it quickly revealed just how meaningful art has been — and still is — in their lives, as well as the place they now wish to give it moving forward.

From Art to Science!

Artists have long recognized the importance of art for our health and well-being, but only recently has scientific research been able to confirm it factually.

Did you know?

  • Art stimulates several regions of the brain at once, helping create new neural connections (neuroplasticity).

  • Art also helps us regulate our emotions by giving us a way to express ourselves — even to release emotions that have been suppressed for a long time (catharsis).

  • Art sparks our imagination and can help us see new possibilities and perspectives — perhaps even glimpses of a more promising future.

  • Art can even improve our concentration and help us enter “the zone,” where we lose all sense of time, space, and even self.

Fun fact!

The benefits of art are observed both in those who create it and in those who witness it!

Your turn!

What place does art hold in your life? When do you tend to turn to art?

How do you feel after creating something yourself — or after experiencing a piece of art?
